Re: 1367: "Installing"

And that's why our latest web browser, Windows 8, isn't actually such a bad idea.

(Windows 8 is Microsoft's way of sticking up the finger to the EU's IE-packaging ruling by just making the whole OS a web browser)

Only two trips this week:

7573 + 28 + 45 = 7646

(and a correction: I don't own a Polar cs-500x but a Polar cs-600x)

Re: State of NVidia Optimus on Linux

I don't think, but I haven't checked lately, that there is no "official" Optimus support for any Linux distributions. The last I've read is that NVidia has not provided a driver for Linux, let alone an open-source one. There is however a workaround that works on Debian: Bumblebee . You can...

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles

7403 + 30 = 7433 Went on my first long bike ride back home. I'm so used to being able to ride 30 miles and still be in the same town. It was odd riding out in the country and even visiting another town while on my ride. Route and statistics Seems like a nice ride. What do you use for your statistic...

Re: I'd like to know the name of this book/short story/comic

I can't honestly say that it isn't possible that I am thinking of Eragon, but I feel as though I'd have remembered picking up a book that was so widely-read at the time. Also, Eragon has a lot more fantasy elements than I remember mystery book having. I feel like this book seems like it had more of...

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles

Average speed 25 km/h, my usual averages are a bit higher (26-28) but since this particular route has a couple of difficult points crossing major roads in confusing situations I think it's going to be difficult maintaining 25 average with a 28 cruising speed. The last miles before the coffee break ...

That sounds interesting. i too, find this subject fascinating, i will have to research it a tad more. As you might have guessed, I think it's pretty interesting too. Another upside is that there's surprisingly little research on the topic, as action generation was a bit neglected in the "tradi...

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles

7302 + 40 = 7342 Doing a bike ride with the business-bike club I'm a member of on saturday. Since I made some suggestions for the shortest of the 3 routes planned for that day, they decided I could lead that group (brave? foolish? we'll see...). So I'm set to guide a number (don't know how many yet...

I don't think I've posted in this thread, yet, so I'll give it a go. I think PLOS ONE would be a nice addition. It's an open access, peer-reviewed journal that accepts primary research from any field. If you don't have access to restricted-access journals, then this is a great journal to scan for interesting articles. There's even a reader's comment section, although...

I like Brad Mehldau's version "Blackbird" (Lennon-McCartney), Youtube video.

Kraftwerk's "Showroom Dummies" is covered rather well by Señor Coconut, Youtube video.

Kurt Rosenwinkel's rendition of "Summertime" (Gershwin) is also neat, Youtube video.

So, how is the preparation for your trip coming along, EvilDuckie? Sounds like you've got a program. I've just been on a short trip to the French Pyrenees and, while my shape is nowhere near the shape I've had a couple of years ago, it actually felt pretty good. I've made the trip with a couple of f...

Re: 1204: "Detail"

Even if the earth was a completely random mess of particles, the sheer amount of particles makes it very likely that there are (pseudo-)patterns of particles that can be mapped exactly with less bits than the amount of particles represented. No lossless compresion algorithm can achieve a average co...

EAlso, the increase in resolution will be limited by the increase in data storage/transfer technology--if your data storage medium could hold one bit per particle, then you would need a storage space the size of the Earth just to map the Earth to the particle level. Your first condition "if yo...
