Re: 1902: "State Borders"

As long as we're moving Long Island to Connecticut, can we move Staten Island to New Jersey too? Kill Van Kull and Arthur Kill are ~1/3 the width of the Verrazzano Narrows. I'm also in favor of combining tiny population states. My senate neutral proposal: Wyoming-Montana-Idaho Vermont-New Hampshire...

Not the same track as Hurricane Screw-it-let's-just-trash-Florida-again, but Irma is looking to cross Florida the long way. And still be hurricane strength when it reaches Gainesville (i.e, ~300 miles from where it will make landfall). Yeah, Florida gets hit all the time, but not usually quite so th...

Re: Breaking Up the United States

Do you change the rules to this before entering the society? Yes, I do. Specifically, I'm rejecting the binary nature of your scenario. Using a multiple winner electoral system for the house would allow more than two parties to exist and be taken seriously. Voices at the thin ends of the bell curve...

Re: Breaking Up the United States

To illustrate, consider a spherical cow. The population is split 52% green, 48% yellow. There are five major issues to be decided each year, and on each of them greens want (100%) high, and yellows want (100%) low. Without considering voting systems, gerrymandering, electoral colleges, and any othe...

If the freezer isn't cold enough, I'm curious how a toaster would do in LN2. Probably want to stand well back though, it's likely to be exciting when the N2 stops being L. Substituting LO2 may also be unwise. My solution to the frozen bread problem has always been to go straight from the freezer to ...

I was going to take issue with "Capable of intentionally releasing poop mid-flight" being no for planes, but the wikipedia article for blue ice says planes can't do so deliberately, <snip> There are many news reports that suggest otherwise, for example: http://metro.co.uk/2017/01/07/woman...

There's a precedent: one Smoot is definitely a lying-down length of a person. Yes, so to measure altitude you'd need to measure in short-Smoots. (Actually, I had thought it was a circumfrence - lore I'm familiar with indicates he was rolled home. However I've seen it the other way too. Smoot was ro...

A careful reading of official Major League Baseball Rule 6.08(b) suggests that in this situation, the batter would be considered "hit by pitch", and would be eligible to advance to first base. Respectfully, I must disagree with this interpretation of 6.08(b). It is my understanding that i...
