A question for the UNIX geeks: do the recursive exploration commands store the inodes to avoid that kind of loop? Most kind of searching commands avoid this by not following symlinks by default. Looking at this do you actually need any special type of wheel at all? The ball will be propelled by shifting the weight around so why not just mount the main heavy part in with ball bearings and have some motors to shift the center of gravity. Perhaps you would have the eeepc and a weight in the ce...

Well the eeepc would make a reasonable choice to drive something like this. It has a webcam, perhaps not the best quality but it should be good enough. It also has wifi, though you need to use madwifi to get it to work. It's a laptop with usb, it should not be too hard to build a usb motor controlle...
