Re: Texas Fertilizer Plant Fire/Explosion

So does treason and other high crimes. Doesn't mean people regularly get convicted or even tried for it. It's much more likely that there will be a settlement with no admission of guilt. That's unfortunately true. I'm assuming that there was wrongdoing on there part. Well there was. They had tons o...

It's not suspicious, it's pathetic. Fire was listed as "not a potential threat" or some such nonsense. Basically, they didn't take any precaution to protect all this explosive material in case of a fire. Is it any surprise it all blew up? About a dozen first responders are dead, are we goi...

Re: Kermit Gosnell - aka why abortion clinics need oversight

Oversight does prevent tragedies. It's how we guarantee that procedures are safe. The only way to guarantee safety is to watch clinics like a hawk so that malpractice like this doesn't happen. Yes, jailing Gosnell does mean that women in Philly have to go to Planned Parenthood instead, which may no...

Re: Kermit Gosnell - aka why abortion clinics need oversight

This isn't about rape or access to contraception. This is about a back alley abortion clinic that existed to serve poor women who had no other options. We shouldn't look at this as a reason that abortion is terrible, we should look at this as a reason why abortion needs to be legal and accessible so...

Specifically, abortion clinics don't need oversight because lack of oversight gives abortion opponents another source of leverage to try to limit women's choice.

The comparison between bow and automatic weapon is specious. Two reasons off the top of my head: 1. It takes somewhat more training to be able to hit a moving target with a bow than a gun, 2. It's extremely difficult to use a bow to indiscriminately spray ammunition at a location. How about Smart Gu...

My big problem with the drone war is that it's being waged mostly by the CIA. They're not technically part of our military so they escape a lot of civilian oversight. We need to bring this stuff back under the auspices of our armed forces.

Two, this is a company that increased CEO pay while losing money. The CEO pay is the clear cause here. Gonna disagree with you here. The CEO and his pay are a symptom, not the root cause. Hostess came out of their first bankruptcy with more debt than they went in with. That tells you that the bankr...

Re: Hostess Closing Down after Strike (Twinkies No More?)

Yeah, I won't dispute that the CEO's pay raises increased their debt from $848 million to $850 million because it's largely irrelevant. The company was in the shitter because of the rather serious problem of not making money, of which a small fraction of that problem can be correlated with CEO pay....

Re: Hostess Closing Down after Strike (Twinkies No More?)

Nah. It was the union. They decided that no job was better than an 8% pay cut. The article makes it seem possible that Hostess may have closed its doors a year from now regardless of the pay cut, but that's still a year of 92% paycheck. Unions do have advantages, but in this case the Baker's Union ...
