Northeastern US - the only place I've heard Hoover as a verb is in British media, although I'm familiar with the brand and have seen Hoover vacuums in homes. Interestingly, to my grandmother (grew up in Ohio during the interwar years) all vacuums are "sweepers" - these things: https://s-me...

To clarify what I'm pretty sure CU meant: Not radicalized in prison (if they survive and are captured) after the terrorist act; radicalized prior to the fact while in prison for something else, after not growing up in a radical religious or ideological setting, and then going on to commit terrorism ...

Re: Why do humans see themselves as different from animals?

Does this question really have a scientific answer? Conjecture: I don't know when the idea would have really started, but by the time any of our ancestors would have worried about consciously classifying things as plants and animals (and from there, bird, beast, fish, etc), there would clearly have ...

Re: Breaking Up the United States

I don't support the idea of breaking up the United States, even if there are significant regional differences (a topic that a reporter at our local major paper, Colin Woodard, wrote a book about - WaPo synopsis article here - and revisited in an article examining Trump's victory). If nothing else, I...

What color is your suit? This guide (although I'm not a big fan of the tone of some of the rest of the site) does a pretty good job, I think, of covering which colors of shoes are supposed to match with which color suit. One disagreement I have seen between that and other similar guides is that othe...

Thanks, that does get me partway there. I'm sure the autotranslation is a bit iffy, but it's definitely enough to tell that a) those aren't the same lyrics, but b) they're thematically not all that different. Drinking (something) to friendship, fellowship, a bright future, etc.

우정의 노래 / The Stein Song (or: Why is my alma mater a hit song in South Korea?)

I did both my undergrad and graduate work at UMaine, where the school song is the Stein Song , which Rudy Vallee made a #1 hit in 1930 (the lyrics kick in around 1:15 after a long intro). My grandmother, who is in her late 80s, doesn't remember much anymore, including her own university's alma mater...

That's not a bad flag. Little bit Costa Rican in its color scheme, which does also make it a little bit North Korean - the latter even has a star. You're right - Quintana was wearing Sagan's white during stage 10 this year and took back enough time to pull it on for himself on the podium that night.
